In contemporary neighborhood design, the front porch
has pretty much lost it’s function for us as a place to live
out life’s important moments. Positioned too far from anyone
else to allow conversation, and having too limited a space for any
real activity, the porch has become a simple ornament or decoration
for most homes. Not so in Village Walk.
Studies of porches in all parts of the country conclude
that an 8’ or deeper porch is necessary to create a space
large enough for chairs, swings, tables and activity. Such a porch
can be successfully used either passively (as in whispered conversation)
or actively (as in a game of chase). A functional porch provides
the homeowner a space that is not completely either inside, nor
outside, but a kind of magical in-between. When positioned within
earshot of the sidewalk (within 20 feet), the porch becomes a kind
of “private/public” space, where passer-by’s can
be engaged in conversation “over-the-rail”, or can be
invited on up onto the porch for a more intimate visit.
Minimum 8’ deep porches are a required architectural
feature of every Village Walk home. So step on out to the porch
with us, and step in to a nostalgic world of family talks, porch
swings, outdoor card games, sunsets, neighbors, and well, life!
